Ty Segall breaks most rules when it comes to recording. He isn’t afraid to record whatever he likes, whenever he likes, an album a year (sometimes more), for a decade so far. Whether he is playing his trusty old Fender Mustang or his weapon of choice nowadays the Les Paul or creating dynamic effects with his phaser pedal, Segall rarely misses a beat. I honestly can’t remember the last time he got a bad review. By the way, the best thing about Segall’s track record is that he’s never afraid to mix it up, which always keeps fans guessing what style of garage-punk-psychdelic-rock currently fancies his mood.
Some critics though occasionally like to point out how Segall’s overreaching style might one day get him into trouble. Will it eventually spell disaster for him? I don’t know about that, but for me for example, Break A Guitar from his 2017 self tilted album, spells disaster in good way! Of course, there isn’t really anything truly profound about this song, just maybe a sense of indulgence or satisfaction of Segall’s own desire to unleash a power-chord apocalyptic anthem. Oh yeah, and break or blow to pieces a lot of guitars. For that you’ll have to watch his official music video. But the music video I’ve attached here should be enough for you to see how one of today’s reigning guitar virtuoso goes about his business, incredibly as always backed by his band, The Freedom Band.
