Lifting the bar higher, effortlessly with ‘Zero Gravity’.

My readers might recall I recently featured Kate Miller-Heidke here a few weeks ago. You might also remember I was excited about the rumours that she was working on something special in the recording studio. As luck would have it, late last week Kate released a stirring new single called Zero Gravity. I honestly have to say the incredibly talented singer songwriter’s song doesn’t disappoint in anyway. It really is quite breathtaking, with Kate seemingly lifting the bar higher than ever, with her unique blend of indie pop and opera.

The release of the song coincidence with national broadcaster SBS’s competition to find our next Eurovision contestant. Kate will perform her new song on a live show broadcast competing against nine other musical acts to become Australia’s representative at this year’s Eurovison Song Contest finals held in Tel Aviv.

This is what Kate said recently about being a finalist, “I’ve never done anything like this before. I do feel vulnerable putting myself out there in a competitive setting. I’m trying to ignore that element, and thinking of it as a very eclectic celebration of Australian music. I think there will be a lot of solidarity amongst the performers.” 

The song she co wrote with collaborator Keir Nuttall, as her song submission for SBS ‘Eurovison – Australia Decides 2019’, is something I feel will appeal greatly to Eurovison sensibilities. Though first she has to convince the voting public here next weekend that she is Australia’s best hope of winning. The only thing that might go against Kate is her eclectic genre busting approach to music, and to be honest, it’s not eveyone’s cup of tea. Those who love her, and that list includes me, will of course disagree, and if it was up to me, she would be off to the Eurovison Song Contest finals tomorrow.

Before you skip to the bottom to listen to Kate’s rousing new song, there is a wonderful inspiring story that goes with it that is best explained by Kate herself: “Zero Gravity is a song about emerging from a depression. I went through a very low period after the birth of my son. The song tries to capture the feeling of coming back to life. I really wanted to write a song that seamlessly blends pop and opera in a non-cheesy way. It’s ultimately a very empowering and uplifting song to perform (as well as a very challenging one with its long high D flat! Why the hell did I put that in??!!)”
