The biggest viral internet stars that come to mind for me are Susan Boyle and her impressive Britain’s Got Talent performance and it goes without saying that Justin Bieber kid. Both have had unprecedented amount of success, especially the latter who, as much as it pains me to say, has broken the internet on more than one occasion. I guess since then, and I am not counting, a host of other You Tube sensations regularly come and go, but more recently I have been intrigued by another viral star called Maggie Rogers. In truth, I actually hate calling her a viral star because this producer/singer songwriter graduate from NYU seems like the real deal.
Maggie Rogers, 23, came to our attention a few years ago with a song called Alaska. Since then, she has signed a record label deal, toured extensively and is set to release her debut album, Heard It In A Past Life in early 2019. Interestingly, from her forthcoming new album comes her new single Light On which combines all the weirdly ethereal indie pop sounds and confessional lyrics that made her an instant hit a few years ago.
While Alaska for the moment remains her signature song, Light On is as creative as anything she has done in the past. But what impresses me the most about Rogers, as she continues to write her own story, is the fact that she remains completely humble despite her instant fame.
“This song is a letter to my fans about the last two years of my life,” says Rogers. “There was so much change that happened so fast, I wasn’t always sure how to make all this stuff feel like me. I was really overwhelmed for a while, and scared too – my life became so public so fast and there were times I wasn’t sure that this was all for me. But I never had doubts about the music. And every night I got on stage and was reminded why I love doing this. This is the most vulnerable I’ve felt in a song and its me saying thank you for all the light my fans brought me when I couldn’t find it for myself. I love music more than anything else in the whole world and I always have. This song is me actively choosing this life – in my way and in my time.”
