On my stereo this week: Betty Taylor’s ‘Can’t Get Enough’ and ‘Young Dumb Immature’.

I stumbled across a burgeoning indie rock outfit called Betty Taylor earlier this year. On vocals (and guitar) is Sophie Patrick with her good mate Kayla Smart on lead guitar, Claire Chittick on bass and Katie Ishaque on drums. And while I hate comparing new bands to other musicians, Betty Taylor’s classic four-piece line-up reminds me of Canada’s empowering female rock band The Beaches. Interestingly, Betty Taylor, named after frontwoman Sophie Patrick’s grandmother, I believe has the potential to fill a vacuum left vacate for decades in Australian music, with its youthful energy and cheeky rock swagger.

Anyway, this Sunshine Coast-based band first announced their arrival a few years ago with their debut single Stallin. It was followed by Glitter and Fuck You, a cheeky break-up anthem filled with love and anger. Then earlier this year I was really impressed with their first new single of 2024 called Can’t Get Enough, which floats around effortlessly with its feel-good vibes. I also especially love Patrick’s vocals (here comes the comparison again), who sort of reminds me of how Sarah Blasko uses her emotive voice to great effect especially on her album Depth of Field.

Honestly, I wish I could tell you more about Can’t Get Enough. It’s one of those songs that can easily get stuck in your head. It’s like an earworm, looping over and over again in your mind with its dreamy infectious beat. But just when you think it can’t get any better than that, Betty Taylor releases their second single of the year, a gritty new indie rock anthem called Young Dumb Immature. It’s fair to say it’s as good as anything I’ve heard this year in alt-rock circles. According to Sophie Patrick, it’s a song about embracing who you are and standing up for yourself, especially when you feel like you are being constantly judged by others.

It’s easy to see how Betty Taylor really has something good going on here in terms of their musical direction and future. You can listen to both Can’t Get Enough and Young Dumb Immature here below. Two different tracks, showcasing how relatable heartfelt lyric can work within a dream pop framework and a desire to rock out.

Betty Taylor sound pretty good. Despite looking at newly released music every week, thus far, they had escaped my attention. My picks frequently include indie rock. Had I come across any of the two songs you highlighted here, I most likely would have included them in one of my new music posts.
