On my stereo this week: “Lost In You” by Childish Gambino.

When Childish Gambino returned back to our shores last month, after cancelling his sold-out Australian tour last year, after suffering a foot injury at a concert in Dallas, the last thing we were expecting in addition to his recent tour was a swan song performance on national youth radio’s Triple J performing a cover version of Lost In You by Chris Gaines.

Now I know what you are thinking, who the hell is Chris Gaines? Well, Chris Gaines was this one-time fictional rock alter-ego that Garth Brooks created for a project way back in 1999 called Garth Brooks In… The Life Of Chris Gaines. (Brooks almost comical project was to include a film about Gaines, which (and I say) fortunately for Brooks fan was abandoned.) In short, the projects lead single Lost In You climbed all the way up the billboard charts to number 5; and the accompanying album incredibly selling somewhere in the vicinity of two million copies. Ultimately and depending on who you believe, the project was viewed as a failure for Brooks becoming one of music’s most weirdest undertakings. Ask a Garth Brooks fan what they think about it now and they are likely to punch you in the face. It seems some fans are still too distraught to talk about Brooks as anything other than a country singer.

While there is so much more to say on this bizzare project, I’ll leave that for you to investigate on your own because really I have spent far too long building this up. So anyway, please enjoy Childish Gambino’s Like A Version performance of Lost In You here below. Interestingly, gone are the acoustic arrangements of Brooks version (again you’ll have to discover that for yourself), replaced by a R&B-styled cover with a churchy organ and small choir.
