I really like Haim but I do hope I don’t tire of them. While I generally like their 80’s and 90’s vibe and their preference for playing pop rock, maybe on their next album (and the rumours are that they are recording together again new material) I’d like to dare Haim to record something outside their comfort zone and embrace an edgier scratchy sound. It’s definitely not beyond them. After all they’re not afraid of incorporating varying musical influences like R&B in their studio sound. Nonetheless, and without completely sounding like a killjoy, there really is a lot that I like about Haim, even if they are exploring break-up theme songs, which seem like a dim a dozen at the moment. But if I’m to nail down something that I really like about them, it has to be hands down the harmonies of this sister act that really gives me goosebumps, especially lead vocalist, guitarist Danielle’s infectious voice.
That said, a few days ago Haim came on the radio, with one of their songs from their debut album Days Are Gone (2013) called The Wire, you know the one that opens with that scratchy guitar riff and clap-along drum beat reminiscent to The Eagles Heartache Tonight. I’m not sure where its inspiration came from but its clever opening intro in my opinion plays nicely into 70s soft rock territory and just maybe as a little bit of a homage to one of my favourite band The Eagles!? But you know what you’ll soon forget about any mention of a homage as The Wire grabs you soon after with its infectious hook and harmonies. Haim certainly know how to ham it up on this heartbreak inspired track. Enjoy!
They’ve got a great thing going on but I know what you mean. They need a few peaks and tangents or it all just sounds like Jane Weildin covering 80’s Fleetwood Mac
I had a listen Robert and I could hear the clappy drum beat and the guitar and was trying to place where I had heard it before, Heartache Tonight…of course it was. But the Eagles are amazing and can’t be beaten for sure. What is your fav Eagles song by the way? For me it’s Hotel California and Take it Easy…it reminds me of being a little kid in the back of my dad’s Torana LOL
My favourite song is ‘One Of These Nights’. I love the verse that says “I’ve been searching for the daughter of the devil himself/ I’ve been searching for an angel in white/ I’ve been waiting for a woman who’s a little of both/ And I can feel her but she’s nowhere in sight.”
Also love Hotel California, New Kid In Town and the extraordinary moving ballad I Can’t Tell You Why.
By the way, my dad had a blue Torana in the 70s and early 80s with an old AM radio glued to 3KZ (Gold FM). It’s no wonder why I love classic rock.
Yeah I love all of these Eagles songs too. I think my dad had a yellow Torana with a black stripe on it. He loved Fox FM mostly and we listened to a lot of 70’s classic rock in the car but also 80’s hair bands as well and pop music, that’s why I still love all of these bands now. Still have a soft spot for ‘We Built This City on Rock and Roll’ by Starship, and also Hall & Oats LOL
One of These Nights – it’s a classic for sure, all of them are so great
And yes about Haim I think they are a good band with a lot of talent but seem to be running out of original ideas lately. They were great at Laneway festival live a few years back, a real highlight
