Dave Grohl’s huge 23-minute instrumental track ‘Play’ is here and it’s epic!

Last week the only exciting news that grabbed my attention was that legendary Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl was gearing up to release his epic 23-minute instrumental track and mini-documentary. Finally, it is here and it’s insane, as Grohl plays an array of instruments on his 23-minute composition.

The solo project dubbed ‘Play’ is a timely reminder to music lovers in particular the new generation of would-be musicians out there that music is thrilling and fun. Grohl also points out that music is incredibly rewarding, especially the challenges of learning to play an instrument. “And even now, as a 49-year-old man,” Grohl explains early in the mini-doco, “I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.”

What impresses me most about Grohl is his seemingly humble reason or motivation for attempting this project. He says, “Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening… and when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out.”

Watching Grohl also trying to figure it out and actually making mistakes while trying to play every instrument during the instrumentals recording, whether trying to play the right guitar chords or the right snare drum beat is fascinating. In the end, Grohl is a guy, just like me, faced with the same challenges or obstacles in music and life. That said, he has seriously challenged me to reconsider how I appreciate music, especially the patience we should afford those learning to play music.

There is so much more to this mini-doco worth exploring and talking about it. But l’m going to leave some of that for Grohl himself to surprise you with. But seriously, if you are a fan of music regardless of what type of music you love, you have to watch ‘Play’. And whatever you do don’t buy into the notion that this project is in some sense nothing more than an exercise in self indulgence on Grohl’s part. That’s just bullshit. My advice to you is to simply sit back and enjoy this epic instrumental track.
