Sydney-based songstress ELKI remains an enigma even some eleven months since we last spoke to her. She still continues to carefully select her projects, rejecting the temptation to yield to others, the overall master of her own meticulously crafted output. That said, I found ELKI recently gearing up for her long awaited debut EP, teasing us with her lead single Movie, an achingly moving ballad. Over the past few weeks it has been gaining traction and at last count surpassing ten thousand plays on Spotify. Always open to chat, I asked ELKI to share some secrets about Movie.
On my playlist is Movie your lead single from your forthcoming EP. It is moody, it’s heartfelt, it’s dark, it aches and your voice really soar on this piano-driven ballad. Where were you when you wrote this, I mean, your head space?
Did you write the lyrics or did you hear the melody in your head first?
Tell me something surprising about the music video?
The car rain scene was shot in a mental asylum. I had to drink whisky to keep warm, as it was freezing. After one take, the security guard wanted us to go home because he had to close up. That was our only take of that scene, it didn’t rain again after that!
The bathroom bit was filmed in a park’s public toilet on a balmy night. At one stage we ducked out to see an amazing full moon. We were gone mere minutes, but when we got back, the evening auto-lock on the door had engaged and we were locked out. We tried everything to get back in. The next morning I camped outside the public toilet at 5am, to wait until the doors would unlock so I could get the camera and my bag back.
The scene in the water was fun as it was warm again, so it was refreshing and a relief that I didn’t get chomped by a shark. So, all in all, a very glamorous experience.
The whole thing was shot on a handycam.
